photo of the day: sneak peek

I'm going to cheat on this one, and just give you the link to the rest of the sneak preview from Saturday's fantastic wedding. It's my birthday, and while the to-do list is somewhat the length of my arm, I'm going to take a little time off to celebrate the last birthday of my twenties. Here's to living a life you love, peoples!

photo of the day: new york, new york

Confession: I hate looking like a tourist. So much so that I have trouble pulling out a camera when I'm in a traditionally touristy area. Consequently I rarely take travel photos, even though it's very good way to practice detail shots. However, when le husband and I took off two days last week to spend some time together in the city, I swore I would actually record our time, at least a little. I only ended up with about 20 pictures that I love, but I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, and that's the point, right?

housekeeping

Hey, dear followers. Just wanted to update you on a few things currently new and/or exciting things over here on the Dye Photography side of things. First off, as of today I'll be speaking at Ignite Sussex next month. Currently tickets are all gone, but you can join the waitlist, and I think that if there's enough interest they're going to try to expand the venue. I'm going to be talking about what it takes to live a life that you're passionate about, and I'm going to be in the company of some pretty impressive speakers. Good times, I think.
Also: I assume that everyone knows this, but there's really no reason for them to. You can become a fan of our work over on Facebook. I update there a little more frequently than I do here, just because it's easier.
And if you really need a fix of my rather odd personality, there's always twitter. It's not all photography-related, and I'm warning you: during the Oscars I update A LOT. So there's that.
I feel like there's more I wanted to say, but I don't know what it was. So until I remember: stay warm, stay dry, stay safe, stay happy.

I'm joining the fight

Normally I try to keep personal stuff off this blog, but this is super-important to me. So here goes.
This laughing, vibrant, slightly drenched lady is Randi Hower Dye, my mother in law. This picture was taken in July 2005, and on March 17, 2006 she died from breast cancer.
You can't see it in the picture, but at this point the cancer had spread through her body and she had to be pushed everywhere in a wheelchair. At our wedding in November she walked down the aisle, though, and sang for the last time in public. She was incredibly gracious, and I wish I'd had a chance to know her better. I think the best thing I can say about her is that she was my husband's best friend. Not many moms can claim that of their oldest sons. When she died she left behind 6 kids and a husband, and the youngest three were 8, 11, and 15. To me, this is the saddest part of all.

So this year, in October, I'm going to walk in the Breast Cancer 3 Day in Washington DC, and I'm going to raise at least $2300, and to do that I need your help. You canĀ go here to donate to the cause. And because I really really believe in what I'm doing, I'm going to give something back to you: when you make a donation of $25 or more, I'm going to send you a 5x7 print from my Etsy shop. I'm not making any money on these, but I want you to have a reminder of how you've given. So when you're filling out the donation form, under "personal note to the participant" write in the name of the print that you want and I'll get that sent to you. It's a win/win situation: you get an awesome picture AND the knowledge that you've helped others.
